| This is an early-19th century devotional statue of the Hindu goddess Durga in the form known as Mahishasurmardini. Durga is an incarnation of the goddess Parvati, and was manifest when evil forces threatened the existence of the gods. To destroy these demons, all the gods offered their radiance to her creation and each formed part of Durga's body. In this statue, Durga is shown slaying the demon king, Mahishasur, as she pulls it from the body of a buffalo it had possessed. Durga has four arms holding different attributes. This is a nice hefty piece and its large size and plentiful detail would make it really stand out in someone’s collection. The statue is 14 cm high and 6 cm wide with a golden color highlighted by dark patina showing minor devotional wear. | ||
