This is a rather rare form of Krishna from Tamil Nadu in the mid 18th century, shown in a straight upright pose and holding a conch shell in his left hand. Images of Vittobha are relatively rare. Vittobha is
a form of Krishna (sometimes also Vishnu) and is typically
portrayed with a conical headdress and with hands on hips, as in this image. This small piece is worn smooth by many years of prayer, and has a nice sleek feel and chocolate brown patina. Height 6.4 cm, width 2.7 cm. |
