This is a good size late 18th century devotional statue of the Hindu goddess Durga portrayed in the sitting position. It is a very attractive piece, with a lustrous golden patina and smooth heavy feel. Considering its color and heft, it is possible that this bronze alloy includes a small amount of gold. Durga is an incarnation of the goddess Parvati, and was manifest when evil forces threatened the existence of the gods.
This statue is 7.8 cm high and 5.3 cm wide. Durga is shown holding the traditional sword and blood cup, as well as an axe and trident. Her face is worn smooth by years of intense devotion. A previous owner has placed copper wire around her lower left hand as part of daily devotion. |
