This is a doubly rare, Chola Period (10-12C) bronze murti of Lord Vishnu and his two consorts, Bhudevi and Lakshmi (Sridevi). Not only a rarity due to its age, this particular configuration and pose is also scarcely seen in any timeframe. Similar to the traditional Lakshminarayana figure, where one consort, Lakshmi, sits upon Vishnu's left knee, this image shows both the consorts, one on each knee. This triad is most often shown standing, so this is an unusual opportunity on several counts. Even with the extensive puja wear and ground patinas, the excellence of the sculpture is apparent and much of the minute and profuse detail of this small murti is still visible. The surface patina ranges from rich dark copper to dusty-green, crystalline verdigris. Although each Devi has lost an arm, and Vishnu one of his original four, the image feels complete and projects a palpable spiritual presence. Height 5.3 cm, width 3.2 cm. |
