This 19thC dark bronze shrine would have been used in the household puja of a Rama devotee. In the Hindu epic Ramayana, when Rama is forced into exile, his brother Bharata storms out of the palace and goes in search of him. When Rama refuses to return from his exile to assume the throne, Bharata obtains Rama's sandals and places them on the throne as a gesture that Rama is the true king. Bharata then rules the city of Ayodhya as a representative of Rama for the next fourteen years. The shrine has guardrails and an entrance on all four sides. Each panel of the guardrail is engraved with designs of birds, fish and flowers. There is decorative lattice around the top and bottom of the shrine and there are two spots where some of the lattice has been broken off. It is very unusual to see a shrine of this type in bronze. Height 19 cm, width 9.5 cm, depth 9.5 cm. |
