This is a beautiful antique bronze statue of Vishnu, cast in western India in the Jain style, with a golden yellow patina and lots of character. It is from the 18th century and shows the attractive devotional wear associated with a piece of its age.
Vishnu is the second member of the Hindu trinity and is the preserver and protector of the universe. In this sthanka-murti or standing figure, Vishnu is shown with four arms. His two upper arms hold a lotus and discus (chakra), and his lower arms hold his staff (gaddha) and a conch (shankha). Finally, below his feet at the top of the pedestal we see two small snakes. Truly a remarkable piece and a very good size. Height 13.9 cm, width 5.5 cm |
