| Large and luminous biomorphic sterling and amethyst brooch from the great Modernist jewelry designer Sigfrido Pineda of Taxco. This pin features a huge and stunning natural amethyst with striations that mimic the dimensional openwork tension in the brooch. It likely dates to the 1960s. ••• Marked Sigi (oval) Tasco (oval), Sterling, hecho en Mexico, Eagle 36 (possibly 35). The brooch measures 3 1/8” x 1 5/8”. It weighs 33 grams. The amethyst cabochon measures 1½” x 5/8”. ••• CONDITION: Excellent estate condition. Some minor pitting/scratches to the stone, which is set tightly in its plain bezel setting. Light surface scratches characteristic of patina to the silver. A spectacular, highly collectible piece. ••• ABOUT THE DESIGNER: From the age of 10, Sigi worked in several of the best Taxco tallers, including Los Castillo and Margot de Taxco, before opening his own shop in 1952 (he was 23). Conceived in the early and mid-1950s, his Modernist designs were widely imitated by others in various media in the 1960s and ’70s. | ||
