Fine Tlingit or Tsimshian Indian Maple Feast Spoon
A wonderful old Northwest Coast Tsimshian or Tlingit hand carved maple wooden feast spoon dating from the late 1800's. This very thin and delicate spoon was carved by the finest craftsman. It has a beautiful sheen and patina and is so delicate, perhaps only 1/8" thick at the bowl. These masterful carvings took much time and energy to make, the craftsman went out into the forest years earlier and found perfect saplings, bent them into shape. Years later he would travel back to this location to harvest the wood for the spoon. The carving is executed in such a manner that the carver carves through the center of the wood, and when looked at closely you can see two center knots. This process produces a very strong spoon that resists cracking. This fine example is in perfect condition.
