Important Early Carved And Painted Tlingit Bentwood Box
An extremely rare and important Tlingit Bentwood carved and painted chest panels. The panels measure 19" and 13" respectively and approx 9" tall making and overall length of 64". The corners have been straightened by steam heat and then attached to a board for stabilization. The base and areas of the sides have eroded away the elements. Note the massive formlines, minimal back ground, simple detail, ovoid relief in both joints and eyes are all indicating an ancient Tlingit painting and carving origins. Pigments are very well preserved blue-green, red and black. Design features bear crests. Good early collection Provenance. Acquired from the Axel Rasmussen Collection, Skagway Alaska. Prior to World War 2 by Earl Stendahl and descent through the family. References Box of Daylight fig 110 , Native Visions page 26, as well as The Transforming image By Bill McLennan and Karen Duffek for related known examples.
