A Fine Early Inuit Eskimo Sugluk Soapstone Woman Carvin
A fine early Inuit Eskimo Soapstone carving depciting a kneeling woman. Carved from a deep gray sand colored stone with a cream colored natural vien running through it. The carving exhibits the early style of the Sugluk or Salliut region of carvers from Canada's arctic north. Note the attention to details especially the hands, serene look on the face and the carving of the legs and feet to the underside. The sculpture measures 5" tall by 4 3/4" deep and 3 1/2" wide. Inscribed with number 1174 to the bottom, which is the E9 number for the noted early carver Miaiji Uitangi Usaitaijuk (born 1911 -). She was included in early exhibits at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and Art Gallery of Windsor. Dating from the 1950's the sculpture is a rare early work that will make a fine addition to anyone's collection.
