Middle Cauca Effigy Vase, Pre-Columbian Colombia
SOLD - Thank You

A finely rendered example of a relatively rare type of effigy vessel from the Pre-Columbian Middle Cauca Complex of ancient Colombia, circa 1000 A.D. – 1500 A.D. This bi-chrome vessel displays impressively, measuring approximately 8 ¾” tall by about 6 ½” wide.

The form tapers from the bottom up, transitioning to a smaller section, upon which is depicted human-like facial features- including ears, eyes, mouth and a prominent nose with a nose ornament. The coffee-bean style eyes imply a squinting, puffy quality, perhaps indicative of an individual or deity in a trance or altered state of consciousness. The shoulders of the vessel also feature small adornos that appear to be zoomorphic in form, as if they are gripping the sides, emerging head first from the vessel.

Reference: See Labbe’s book “Colombia Before Columbus” for similar examples and scholarly information.

Condition: In excellent, original condition, with no restoration. There is a small area of ancient loss (only about ¾” wide) on one side of the bottom edge, with some ancient erosion to the surrounding surface of the lower base. There is ancient abrasion to the tip of the nose, and minor areas of abrasions, chips, weathering and wear overall. Ample mineral and sediment deposits inside and out attest to the age and authenticity of this piece.

Provenance: Former Florida, USA private collection.
