A wonderful Nazca painted bowl in excellent condition, ca. 100 A.D. - 600 A.D. Nazca pottery is prized for its wide variety of painted designs. This vessel depicts what is referred to as a "simple step-fret" pattern, depicted in dark browns/blacks, reds, oranges, and whites, with a rich reddish-brown painted surface on the bottom and orange interior. The step-fret pattern is thought to perhaps mirror geometric designs found in the Nasca surroundings, such as terraced mountainsides (modified for agricultural purposes) or possibly even temple steps. Size: measures approx. 6.75" in diameter. Condition: this bowl is intact and in exceptional cosmetic condition. Provenance: former Canadian collection. Reference: see "A Sourcebook of Nasca Ceramic Iconography" by Donald A. Proulx, pg.181, for comparable patterns and commentary on this design. Note: while Nazca is commonly spelled using a "z," the indigenous spelling, using an "s" instead of a "z" (Nasca), is preferred among scholars of this subject. |
