A large and excellent example of a Jalisco female figure from Pre-Columbian West Mexico, circa 150 B.C. - 250 A.D. Measuring approximately 10 1/2" tall by about 7" wide, this hollow figure depicts a seated female with arms engaged in what is likely and ancient symbolic gesture. Although we may never know what this gesture was symbolic of to the ancient inhabitants of the Jalisco culture, it has been theorized that it may symbolize an effort to ward off female menstruation to promote fertility. This is a very aesthetically appealing example of the type. Whereas many examples show generally unbalanced proportions, this example exhibits exquisite proportion and nice features. She is shown wearing multiple ear ornaments, arm bands/bangles and a cap or short head dress of some kind. The piece still shows strong remnants of the original light grey slip with red painted accents. Condition: This figure is in excellent condition. Only very minor professional repair/restoration has been performed as follows: The figure's left leg was re-attached at the hip, with minor restoration only over the clean break line. Other than that, a minor, thin hairline crack was stabilized and restored on the figure's bottom, and the tip of her right "pinky" finger was missing and was restored. The surface exhibits a fantastic patina, with ample mineral deposits and root marks overall which she bears as hallmarks of her age and hundreds of years spent in burial.
