A Tiwanaku polychrome cup from Pre-Columbian Bolivia, circa 600 A.D. - 1000 A.D. Measuring approximately 4 1/2" wide by nearly 2 1/2" tall, this cup is formed in a similar manner as the tops of larger flared-rim vases, and features typical Tiwanaku geometric designs in orange, brown/black, and cream/white pigments. Interestingly, there is an incised "X" that appears to have been made by the maker's fingernail on the bottom. This may have been intended to represent the four directions, or may have been an early form of the artists signature in the absence of a written language. Condition: In original condition with no restoration or repair. There are ample remains of root marks, mineral deposits and sediment overall that attest to the age and authenticity of the piece. Provenance: Former Barney Mallonee collection. Collected in the early 1900's. Mr. Mallonee collected this and a large collection of other Tiwanaku artifacts in South America in the very early 1900's near the end of World War I. They remained in his personal collection and were passed down through his family to the most recent owner- his Grandson, Rudy. Until recently the collection was in storage for nearly two decades, seen again for the first time in many years. |
