A nice example of a seated Quimbaya "Retablo" male figure from Pre-Columbian Colombia, circa 1100 A.D. - 1400 A.D. This item measures approximately 7" tall (item alone, without stand) by about 6" wide (at widest point), and about 7 3/4" tall with stand. There are original holes across the top of the head and forehead, which may have been made to hold feathers or some other attached ornamentation in antiquity. The nose was perforated by the maker, and was probably once adorned with a gold nose ornament, no longer present nor included. There are also four perforations on the body that may have also been for the purpose of securing other decorative elements, or for suspension. Remnants of white decorative pigments remain, evidencing once further facial painting. Includes custom display stand. These figures are so restrained and minimalist in their representation that they almost have the look of Modern/Post-Modern art. They are powerful and expressive, and are highly desirable examples of Pre-Columbian art that hold their value well. Condition: As is typical for examples of this type, this item has had professional, expert restoration to a re-glued break on the upper right corner of the figure's head, a re-glued break across the neck/chest where the head attaches, with replaced loss to some fingers, and part of the figure's left foot. Minor chipping, abrasion, pigment loss and wear overall. Heavy mineral deposits overall that attest to the age and authenticity of the piece. Provenance: Former private Florida, USA collection. An excellent example of a Pre-Columbian Quimbaya "Retablo" figure from ancient Colombia that is ready to display. |
