Exceptional and rare this sterling silver & blue Nevada turquoise belt buckle was designed & signed circa 1950's by Native American Hopi designer Preston Monongye (1927-87). Buckle measures 3" X 2" & weighs 74 grams, 2.6 oz. The large Burnham turquoise nugget measures 1 1/2" X 1" and is in perfect condition. Monongye's 1950 hallmark is impressed on the reverse. Buckle swivel and hook work smoothly and securely. The tufa cast silver has a gorgeous vintage patina. The buckle will take up to a 1 1/2" wide strap. The contemporary hand tooled leather strap pictured is included. This strap is 1 3/8" wide & is size 34 but measures 38" long. Further information on Monogye and his hallmarks can be seen on p. 231 in Bille Hougart's LITTLE BOOK OF MARKS ON SOUTHWESTERN SILVER.
Preston Monongye designs are included in the collections of the Smithsonian Institute museum, the Heard Museum, and the Denver Art Museum among several others.
