This Magnificent dish was given to Dorian Ball (Who salvaged the Diana Shipwreck) by Michael Hatcher when they were recovering the Nanking Cargo. It is underglaze Blue and enamels which were over the glaze and have been eroded by the coral and sand. However, all of the enamels are seen in ghost form! I have managed to take a photograph showing a large part of this dish in its 'ghost form' which is unique to shipwreck cargoes...

This piece has an underglaze blue decoration with remaining evidence of enamel detailing which during manufacture was applied on top of the glaze. During the hundreds of years spent submerged beneath the seabed, the enamel decoration had no protection from the ravages of the sea thus being slowly worn leaving only a ghost form of detailing seen when held in the light. The condition of this piece is good considering the age with rubbed all over glaze but good strong colouring...

This provincial bowl is freely painted around the exterior with three roundels depicting a deer, crane and foliate spray. The interior bears three splodges of cobalt blue where the artist obviously had too much colour on the brush. These provincial wares don’t have a ring like some of the finer wares, more like a dull thud. Size:14.5cm in diameter The Vung Tau was discovered in 1989 by a Vietnamese fisherman trawling the sea-bed for shellfish...
