| By Thomas Smythe. c1825-1906 Suffolk School. This lovely scene is refreshingly different to the majority of pictures by this famous artist in so much as it depicts a large central figures of a traveling organ grinder, his instruments carried by one shoulder with a monkey perched on top, beside him a larger monkey dressed in a military uniform riding a newfoundland type dog. In the distance is a typical Suffolk town waiting to be intertained. The picture is in very good condition and is painted on professional artists board stamped by G.Rowney of London. It is interesting to note that on the back is a pencilled price of £4.10s, also there is a label from mondells gallery "Fine Art Dealers of Elm Hill Norwich and Polok gallery London". The painting is in a gilt gesso frame which was added around 1968 when it was aquired by my parents. A few minor losses to the gilt bits around the inner frame, but this is hardly noticeable. I would like to keep this fine painting but sadly it has to be sold to meet ongoing inheretance tax. Size: with frame; 55cm (21 1/2"inches) x 47cm (18 1/2"inches) Without the frame; 43cm (17"inches) x 35.5cm (14"inches) | |||||||||||||
