Shipwreck Abbatucci Cargo Gold Earrings circa 1869
The General Abbatucci and her mysterious shipment lay on the soft seabed for 127 years untill she was located in 1996. The expected cargo of gold was never found, but among the twisted metal hull and skeletal remains were pieces of jewellery, watches and coins which were recovered from a depth of over 8,000 feet. These pieces were sold at Christies Auction in 1997. This truly beautiful pair of solid gold drop earrings were sold at Christies Auction 1997. The decoration of them is amazingly intricate. On the central oval panel is a star motif, which is inset with a single pearl. Another pearl is set within a stippled flower motif and from the bottom of each earring falls a single golden drop. The earrings have been cleaned by Christies, the pearls added by a professional jeweller. Not only are these earrings highly wearable but they are also greatly enhanced by their fascinating provenance. A wonderful piece of jewellery to own, full of character and history. Size. 6 cm height . If you have any queries about this item please feel free to contact me. Thank you for looking and for your time.
