Charcoal Hunting Picture-Edward Frank Gillett 1874-1927
This beautifully executed charcoal drawing was done around 1912. It depicts a gentleman on a heavyweight hunter following the hunt. I have been hunting for over 45 years and I recognise immediately that this was drawn by someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of horses and horsemanship. First thoughts on seeing it were, ''Is this a Munnings''? Every line in this drawing counts. The movement and action of the horse is superb. The man looks as though he was born on a horse. The way he sits on his saddle is relaxed with absolutely no style but his features show the confidence that he has in the handling of this powerful animal. His large hands hold the double reins which lead to the pelham bit which is the horse equivelent of a vehicle with servo brakes. With his gnarled and weather beaten face and a cigarette nonchalently hanging from the corner of his mouth, the character of this piece is unmistakeable. This drawing surely deserves to go to someone who loves hunting and appreciates the quality of this fine drwing. About the artist: Edward Frank Gillett 'Frank Gillett': Known for his paintings, engravings and black and white illustrative drawings, Frank Gillett was a leading artist for the Daily Graphic from 1898 to 1908. After that time, Gillett was mainly occupied in painting and engraving sporting subjects and rural scenes. Altogether it is estimated that Frank Gillett created slightly less than fifty original drypoint engravings during his career. The most comprehensive collections of Gillett's engraved art are housed in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Size, 69 x 55 cm. If you have any questions about this item, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you for looking and for your time.
