| Books containing the songs and chants from Medieval and Renaissance periods were used for religious services. These sacred music manuscripts, on parchment, were lettered in large print format so they could be seen by groups of singers. The books stood open on the lectern during religious services and their illuminations, with brilliant colors and gold, contributed to the visual grandeur of the sanctuary.
