The Chinese Scholar Aesthetic
Our catalogue typically includes Chinese paintings, ceramics and porcelain, bronze, censers, jade carvings, display stands and objects fashioned from rare hardwoods such as zitan and huanghuali. More important to us than any particular category or material, however, is the recreation and continuance of the Chinese scholar's studio of the Ming and Ching dynasties. Nature, as represented in its idealized and stylized expressions through the centuries, is the underlying theme of many of our sometimes aesthetically challenging scholar's rocks, root form brushpots and eccentric brushrests.
From Antiquity to Modernism
Inspired by the past, we are, however, fascinated by all beautiful things be they ancient, antique or modern. While a specialized and unashamedly elite Chinese aesthetic is the focus of our collection, we nevertheless believe that the surreal landscapes found in our Dali Marble dreamstone panels can enhance the most severe, contemporary and minimalist interior, that a Murano glass vase circa 1960 would have delighted a certain Ching emperor and that our lingbi scholar rocks qualify as superb and elegant abstract sculpture defying gravity and interpretation.
