Seven Ko-Imari Blue & White Dishes, Relief Decoration
These are seven small blue and white Ko-Imari (old Imari) bowls from the late Edo Period, very delicately potted of thin, translucent porcelain with underglaze blue color ground and fine, contrasting molded relief decoration in white. The foliate rim form, derived from classical Song Dynasty Chinese wares, corresponds to the five inside lotus lappet panels, each panel distinctly outlined in white with a dotted blue ground and white molded relief decoration of ruyi-lingzhi cloud motif. The inside, central medallion depicts a crane flying amidst similar clouds. While the auspicious crane decoration is rather distinctly Japanese, the foliate rim form, the ruyi-lingzhi cloud motif, and the blue and white color scheme all derive from earlier Chinese wares. These were made for the domestic Japanese market and are very unlike Imari export wares of the Edo and later Meiji periods. Condition: Original kiln flaws and burn marks. No chips, cracks or hairline fractures although two dishes have some wear to the glaze near the rim and one in particular shows subsequent staining, although there is no loss to the decoration. (Individual photos will be e-mailed to you on request.) The undersides, which are glazed and well-finished, all shows some degree of very fine craquelare from age and use. Dimensions: diameter 9.2cm (3-1/2”); height: 2.7cm (1”). Each dish weighs on average 76.4 grams (2.62 ounces). Sets of antique, hand-made dishes should be of slightly variable weight, in this case each dish weighs from 70 to 84 grams (2.4 to 2.9 ounces). Collective weight: .539Kg (1 lb. 3 ounces). Shipping weight: 2.5 lbs. Note: “Ko-Imari” or ‘Old Imari’ here refers to all Imari wares made prior to the Meiji era (pre-1868).
