A Longquan bowl with impressed foliage design, Zhejiang
A Longquan bowl dating to the late Southern Songto Yuan period (circa 12/13th C.) of elegant form with gently curved sides and everted mouthrim, the uniform olive green glaze extending to the bottom of the raised foot, the unglazed underside showing characteristic “burnt orange” traces from firing. The interior of the bowl is decorated with a simple medallion containing a tiny impressed flower design surrounded by three pairs of (six) leaves attached to delicate tendrils. A loss to the exterior of the foot reveals the pale grey-colored clay typical of Longquan wares. Bowls with impressed foliage patterns are known from the Song period, although the relatively heavy weight of this small example is more characteristic of Yuan and early Ming wares. Condition: The bowl has a loss to the foot as previously noted (please see all photos) and is priced accordingly. It is otherwise without chips, cracks or restorations. Dimensions. Height: 7cm (2-3/4”); diameter of mouthrim: 14.8cm (5-13/16”); diameter of foot: 6.5 cm (2-1/2”). Weight: .457Kg (1 lb.). Copyright (c) 2013 by Robert McCaffrey for Ruyi Studio San Francisco.
