An Early American Stoneware Jarlet, 18th / 19th C.
AN EARLY AMERICAN COLONIAL LUG HANDLED JARLET; 18TH /EARLY 19TH CENTURY. A beautifully shaped and delightfully aged stoneware jarlet of bulbous form narrowing at the neck and base with a well-defined mouthrim and tiny applied lug handles, the bottom extremely flat and unglazed, the surface otherwise covered with an allover natural brown to celadon colored glaze and beautifully weathered with an allover craquelare to the surface. This jar was found in Mauricetown, New Jersey (Cumberland County), an area that is still rural and was inhabited in the 17th century by Swedish fishermen before English settlers arrived. (One of the houses in this town was recently discovered to have log-cabin construction which had been hidden for many years by its Victorian era additions). An old inventory tag “2098” on the underside indicates this once belonged to a private collection. Condition: The surface glaze has tiny losses and chips and is worn thin in expected areas; there are tiny frits to the well-worn rim and base. There are otherwise no significant cracks, losses or restorations to the heavy body. An inspection under uv light reveals that the tiny loop handles are original. Dimensions: approximately 2-3/4” high; diameter of base 1-5/8” and weighing 7.1 ounces (20.1g) ADDITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS WILL BE PROVIDED ON REQUEST.
