LARGE SILVER VICTORIAN BUCKLE : AM JW MT
A LARGE ANTIQUE SILVER BUCKLE circa 1880 and very possibly earlier. This is a finely detailed and large Victorian buckle with a concave face, finely beaded edges and exquisite neo-classical motifs of festoons and florets within an oval format measuring 3-3/8 inches (8.5 cm) wide by 2-5/8 inches (7 cm) high and weighing 67 grams (2.3 ounces). The moveable prongs and hinged attachments are of brass or alloy (for strength) and the oranmental buckle appears to be of high content silver although we cannot be certain. The buckle is marked on back only with tiny numbers: 15681 on the moveable brass attachment. The buckle is in excellent condition. We have only polished the surface tarnish and left deep areas unpolished to highlight the exquisite detail. I believe this buckle was originally intended to attach to a cloth or silk sash of some sort, but the prongs and axle could not sustain a heavy leather belt. Purchased in Philadelphia in the 1970s, it is probably of American manufacture.
