A Song/Yuan Dynasty Porcelain Bowl, Molded Decoration
An elegant, pale blue-green glazed celadon bowl of classic form, thinly potted with a translucent porcelain body, hand-shaped at the wheel but with molded decoration to the interior, the thin glaze pooling around the molded flower and foliage decoration below a band of key-fret pattern. This elegant little bowl dates from the Southern Song (1127-1279) to Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). While mold-decorated white Ding wares were also produced by the contemporaneous Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), the blue-green yingqing glaze and classic form of this bowl with its gently curving cavetto and everted lip are more indicative of Song and Yuan products. The unglazed lip and footrim (but carefully glazed foot) and lack of spur marks indicate the firing of multiple bowls in stepped saggars. The success of molded decoration—actually beginning during the late Northern Song, but not common until the Southern Song—depended on improvements in the clay and the use of thin glazes. The finely levigated clay body of this example is definitely translucent under a bright light and should therefore be considered porcelain. While the Yuan Dynasty saw increased production for export, examples found outside of China tend to be heavier wares which easily survived a journey in the ballast of a ship where the increased weight was actually desireable. The more luxurious, thinly potted translucent porcelain wares of this period were generally intended for domestic use and are usually found within China as was this example. Condition: Perfect. Without cracks or chips, or any frits to the rim and no losses or repairs. Dimensions/Weight: Diameter across mouthrim: 15.4cm (6”); height: 5.7cm (2-1/4”); diameter across footrim: 4.4cm (1-3/4”); weight: 230grams (8.1 ounces).
