EBONY WRITING BOX; SUZURIBAKO FROM KYOTO : WD SA
A JAPANESE EBONY (“KOKUTAN”) SUZURIBAKU or writing box CIRCA 1860-1880 from Kyoto. Of simple form, immediately calling to mind the precious hardwood objects so popular with the Chinese literati and now generally classified as “scholar objects” characterized by elegant form devoid of superfluous decoration. Fashioned from fine ebony wood which would have been imported from China where it was known as wumu [lit. “black wood”]. Elegantly shaped with rounded corners, the lid subtly domed, the bottom half with beaded lip on an integrated shallow pedestal base with scalloped edge. Includes a small, undecorated inkstone in similar austere style. In very good condition without cracks or restorations and only minor wear, superficial scratches or dents to the surface. ADDITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Dimensions: box is approximately 5.7cm (h) x 25.5cm x 18.5cm (2-1/4” x 10” x 7-1/4”) and weighing 847 grams (1 lb 14 ounces); inkstone is approximately 2cm (h) x 13.5cm x 7.4cm (1” x 5-1/2” x 3-1/4”).
