| FROM A JAPANESE COLLECTION, this is, however, the work of a Chinese artist trained in classical Chinese landscape painting. A fan painting in excellent condition on sumi paper and mounted on silk. The Chinese inscription translates roughly as “Using the painting technique of Li Cheng to depict the poetic ideas of Li Bai. I like antiquity and so I paint to amuse myself.” Signed Zheng Heng and using the title of ju shi meaning either a lay Buddhist or in the literati tradition, a scholar/officer residing at home and no longer holding office. The Japanese inventory translation is “Pines at a waterfall” and signed as “Shisen koji” with the seal of “Rokubei Jo noin.” The painting is dated either 1901 or 1841 “Kanotu-ushi aki (fall) (60 year cyclical calendar). Dimensions: 18 cm (h) x 50 cm (w) (7” x 19-3/4”) on a silk mount measuring 30 cm (h) and 55 cm (w) (7” x 19-3/4”). | ||
