A KOREAN BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN VASE
CHOSON PERIOD(1392-1910) OR LATER BUT BEFORE 1980. UNCERTAIN DATING, perhaps by a 20th Century master or as early as the 19th Century. A few 19th Century Korean wares commissioned by the Japanese are known to have kiln marks or signatures but this is not typical of Korean wares before 1950. Of elegant globular form with a high waisted neck and broad mouthrim, the inside revealing wheel-turned construction. The underglaze blue and white decoration is superb both in detail and composition, the lotus flowers with stems and leaves beautifully rendered in subtle shades of blue and white cobalt tones.* The recessed footrim reveals an unidentified mark which is probably that of a kiln and not the artist. There are no chips, losses or restorations. There is some faint brownish discoloration from use barely discernible which may be original to the firing. The body is a pale blue-grey ‘white’. Dimensions: 15.5cm high, 10.5 cm diameter across mouthrim, 7cm diameter across foot (6-1/4” high). Weight: 876 grams (1 lb 15 ozs). *The Chinese-influenced painters who decorated blue and white wares for at least part of the Joseon (Yi) period were professionals registered with the Office of Paintings. See Korean Art and Design (The Samsung Gallery of Korean Art). 1992. The Victoria and Albert Museum. ISBN 1 85177 1042; p. 62. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS WILL BE E-MAILED TO YOU ON REQUEST.
