RATS & GRAPES CHICKENBLOOD CHOP FOR YEAR OF THE RAT

A delightful uninscribed Chinese seal chop decorated with rats feasting at clusters of grapes. The subject matter seems more typical of Japanese netsuke, but this is a soapstone carving in a color called “chicken blood stone” which is highly prized by the Chinese. The naturally shaped, narrow stone is approx. 7 cm (2-3/4”) long on one side, the narrow side measured from the flattened bottom reserved for the seal chop varying from 13 cm to 18 cm wide. The irregular shape of the polished stone makes it easy to grasp firmly, accomodating four fingers to the flat side of the chop, the undulating side fitting against the mound of the thumb to ensure a firmly applied seal. Weight: 156 grams (5.5 ounces).
