| 12th C. Koryo (935-1392). A celadon cup of lovely form with a grey-black splash across the body— resembling and roughly contemporaneous with the Chun Yao (Jun Yao) purple splash wares of the Chinese Song Dynasty— although this is a distinctly Korean cup, the grey-green color familiar to us primarily in slightly later Koryo sangaam (inlaid decorated) wares. On a raised footrim with, of course, the distinctive sandy kiln adhesions found on Korean ceramics of this period. A very subtle, triple-string band decoration surrounds the cup about 1.2cm below the mouthrim and can be felt beneath the glaze. The simple and elegant shape, the still vitreous finish with its aged craquelare and a large thumb-size area of wear or kiln loss to the glaze offering a tactile contrast, and its perfect size make this a wonderful candidate for the Japanese tea ceremony. Dimensions: height: 6.5cm (2-1/2”); diameter across footrim: 4cm (1-1/2”); diameter across mouthrim: 9cm (3-1/2”). Weight: 151 grams (5.3 ounces). | ||
