| 12th C. Koryo Dynasty (935-1392). Although sanggam wares were produced for only a relatively short period (from about 1150 to the beginning of the Mongol invasions in 1231), the simple design of this example suggests that it is among the earliest of such inlaid celadons. Slightly later pieces usually exhibit greater sophistication in form and more complex and ambitious decoration. In this example, a simple flower is represented by a black dot surrounded by seven white, dot-like petals. This decoration appears in the center of the dish and is repeated three times around the sides. That this is a saucer for a long lost wine cup is indicated by a slightly raised circular platform (about 5cm in diameter) at the bottom of the dish which helped secure the cup in place. The body has slanted sides, a well defined and rounded lip and a very short and narrow raised footrim. Excellent condition. Dimensions: height: 2.5cm (1”); diameter across mouthrim: 11.cm (4-1/2”); diameter across footrim 4cm (1-5/8”). Weight: 137 grams (4.8 ounces). | ||
