RUSSIAN ICON OF THE CHRIST, CIRCA 1860
A Russian icon of Christ on a painted wooden panel, with ornate silvered metal repousse cover, red velvet backing and in an antique shadow-box with hinged and glazed cover. The elaborate repousse is cutaway to reveal the compassionate face of Christ finely depicted with large, imploring eyes, His right hand raised in blessing; His left hand holding open scripture, His face, hands and fingers all well-articulated. The metalwork is ornate and refined with Christ’s robes and halo, surrounded by a classical key-fret design, in rather high relief with elaborate stamped margins. The silvered cover bears three Cyrillic monograms and inscriptions: at the upper left and upper right corners and at the bottom center. The cover has also been stamped with three tiny marks just below Christ’s left hand, and with two additional marks on the hidden underside as shown. Many antique icons are protected in very old shadow boxes of this type. The box has a hinged cover and clasp and a very old loop-on-stem hanging hook. The ‘wavy’ glass has bubbles and imperfections typical of 18th and early 19th Century glass, and the back of the box has chamfered edges also typical of that period. The narrow frame of the cover is embellished or perhaps reinforced with a thin metal wire beading insert with slight losses to the wire which at any rate has tarnished to a dark color and is nearly invisible on the dark, well-patinated box. Condition: The icon is in very good condition with normal wear from long use as a devotional object. The painting itself is in perfect condition, showing only a desirable craquelare to the surface which is requisite for any authentic antique oil painting. There are very minor dents to the silvered cover and some tarnishing of the silvering under which the base metal appears to be brass. There are some small splits and losses to the metal where the metal cover was folded over and attached with tiny nails to the outside edges of the wooden plank which are not seen when viewing the icon from the front. The red velvet backing has faded to a soft rose color, indicating that the icon was exposed for many years of devotional use before it was associated with its current, protective antique box. Icon Dimensions: 10-3/8” (h) x 8-5/8” (w) x 1” (d); Box Dimensions: 11-7/8” (h) x 10” (w) x 2-3/8” (d). Additional detailed photographs will be e-mailed to you on request.
