Japan magnificent pair stone Shi Shi Komainu 18c.
Can you imagine these beautiful beasts in your garden? A monumental and choice pair of stone Japanese Shi Shi Komainu dating to the middle Edo period, 18th century. Undoubtedly originally from a temple, they would have served as entry guardians. They measure 37" high and 27"d and 12"w without bases. The bases are not included.

Older pairs of Buddhist mythological "Komainu" like these are infrequently found in this choice quality and this early age. They are often seen guarding entrances to Japanese Buddhist temples and shrines. Shishi are traditionally depicted in pairs, one with mouth open (Ah) and one with mouth closed (Un). "Ah" is the first sound in the Japanese alphabet, while "N" (pronounced "un") is the last. These two sounds symbolize beginning and end, birth and death, and all possible outcomes (from alpha to omega) in the cosmic dance of existence.
