A huge and stunning possibly one-of-a-kind brilliant crackled blue-green almost turquoise with a splash of dark blue, glazed modernist vase is circa 1880 and from Awaji pottery. This pottery was located on Awaji island in Japan between Honshu and Shikoku. It was founded about 1830 by a doctor named Minpei in the village of Iga. The Awaji potters were masters of their crafts, specialists in using high-fired, white or cream colored clay that's almost like a stoneware and using brilliantly toned glazes- tranlucent and finely crackled. The Awaji kilns ceased operation about 1930. This monumental, rare example, undoubtedly influenced by the modernist movement and more likely by the visit to the Awaji kilns by the noted English designer Christopher Dresser of Linthorpe Art Pottery, Yorkshire - his visit recorded in 1875. Very fine condition. Dimensions: 23" high, 16" handle to handle, 3.5" wide Impressed mark on base. Quite exceptional. This is a very nice find coming from a private american collection.
