Japanese monumental painted Ebisu and Daikoko Sculpture
Cheerful art, this is a fine and large scale late Meiji period painted and carved wooden sculpture okimono of legendary figures Ebisu and Daikoko- two of the Seven Lucky Gods from Japan that bring luck and wealth to their owner! This is a gorgeous, early and lovely carving with finely painted detail- subtle colors of gold, red, black, and gray- now hard to find and especially in this collectible size. Sculpture dimensions: Height: H: 42cm (16.5") W: 24cm (9.5")

Daikokuten (Daikoku) is regarded as god of wealth, commerce and trade and he makes all things possible with his golden "magic hammer." Ebisu, god of fishers or merchants is usually depicted carrying a sea bream. Ebisu and Daikoku are often paired and represented together in carvings and paintings. The Seven Lucky Gods are often depicted on a treasure ship. Tradition holds that the seven gods will arrive in town on new year and distribute fantastic gifts to worthy people. Children often receive red envelopes imprinted with the ship which contain gifts of money around the New Year.

This is a very nice find coming from a private Japanese collection.
