This sterling silver Mizpah pin is a great example of the sentimentality of the period. Mizpah, (a Hebrew word which literally means "watchtower") means "May The Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent one from another." This pin comprised of two hearts joined by oak leaves (symbolic of faith and virtue) has the above phrase engraved on one heart. It is 1 1/2 inches wide by 3/4 of an inch high. In excellent condition and highly collectible. Hallmarked with the anchor for Birmingham, the date mark for 1906-07 and the lion passant for sterling silver. There appears to be a maker's mark as well but it's illegible. (as you can see the back is very tarnished; I can easily clean it for you, if you desire.) I have several other pieces of Mizpah jewelry including pins, rings and a locket. From my home page enter "mizpah" in the search box. |
