This Victorian Mizpah ring is gold and enamel and set with an opal. It is a wonderful example of Mizpah jewelry, a type of sentimental jewelry popular with Victorians. Mizpah, (a Hebrew word which means "watchtower") represents "May The Lord watch between me and thee while we are absent one from another." These were given as love tokens, particularly in parting and the opal (symbolizing pure thoughts)seems like an appropriate choice in that regard! The ring is in excellent condition and the enamel is pristine. The shank has a maker's mark (S&B), and is marked for London, 9K gold and the year mark for 1898 (or possibly 1918). It is a size 6 and I would not recommend resizing this. This is an uncommon example of Mizpah jewelry and a beautiful piece of history. I have several other pieces of Mizpah jewelry including pins, rings and a locket. From my home page enter "mizpah" in the search box. |
