| Lovely, silver Jugendstil brooch or pin; Jugendstil was the German equivalent of Art Nouveau though as with all Art Nouveau contemporaneous movements it had it's own national characteristics. This piece utilizes negative space to showcase the fluidity of the flowers and leaves to create a sense of movement. The use of repousse (pushing the metal out from behind to create a 3 dimensional surface) contributes to this sense. Though either side of the large central dividing leaf are somewhat different there is still a strong symmetry to the design which is further accentuated by the constraints of the surrounding oval bezel. This is a very graceful and nicely executed design. It is marked on the rear, 800 and PW (capital P with a W in the top of the P). I have not been able to identify the maker as of yet. It has the original pin stem and c clasp closure and is 2 inches by 1 and 3/16ths inches. | |||||||
