| Mose Tolliver (B. 1919-2006) Alabama Folk Art giant. Tolliver was one of the most influential painters in the field of Southern self-taught art, and his death truly signals the end of an era. Mose has been included in most major museum exhibit of folk art from the Corcoran's traveling exhibition, "Black Folk Art in America, 1930-1980" in Washington D.C (1982), to "Passionate Visions of the American South, " which originated in New Orleans Museum of Art in 1993, to current "Self-Taught Artists of the 20th Century: An American Anthology," which opened at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in May of 1998. In 1960 Tolliver lost his legs in an accident and by 1970 was encouraged to paint and his work began. Mostly on board and masonite. Tolliver paints flat and simple central figures in a field of colour, self portraits and portraits of his late wife Willie Mae, fantasy animals and flowers and vegetables. | ||||||||||
