Jesse Mitchell was born in 1959 in Western Tennessee, and moved around a lot as the child of an Army man. Though he was quite intelligent and did well in school, Mitchell left after the ninth grade "to live with an older woman." Mitchell works in several media. He alternates between pen and ink drawings , paintings and "built up" pieces concocted from a home brew of paper mache. He uses anything he can find, including grass clippings, mud, commercial clay, packing from computer cartons, even discarded chairs. His life is full of drama, often tumultuous, but always passionate, and all of this exudes from his work.
