This magnificent large Austrian bronze male pheasant, in brilliant color with his long train or tail behind him, is perched on what appears to be a green onyx base that would be great on a desk. This circa 1900 bird measures 13 inches long from head to tail, 4-1/2 inches high and 2-1/2 inches wide at the breast. The base is 14 x 8-1/2 inches. Austrian or Vienna cast bronzes began production around 1850 in small factories and private artist studios and were famous for their naturalistic and detailed representation of figures and animals. Whether painted or with natural patina, animals like this pheasant were sought after for their expressiveness and great realistic detail. This is a really fine example of the art.
