HELEN LAFRANCE/ OUTSIDE MY STUDIO/SOUTHERN OUTSIDER ART
Helen LaFrance painted this evocative oil on canvas depiction of what is outside her studio. Her imagination is running wild, so it shows. Dimensions are 21 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches, sight size and 22 1/2 x 26 1/2 framed. Helen LaFrance is a self-taught black artist who was born in 1919 Western Kentucky. Her specialty is memory paintings of the disappearing lifestyle of the rural South, although she has painted religious themes and floral studies, usually in oil on convas. She has painted since she was a small child, always following her mother's wisdom to "paint what you know." Not limited to two-dimensional media, she used to carve wooden animal sculptures and dolls and made wonderful quilts in addition to her memory paintings. LaFrance's work is held in many private collections, including Bryant Gumble and contemporary artist Red Grooms, and museums throughout the United States. She is featured in a chapter of Kathy Moses' definitive regference book, "Outsider Art of the South", published by Schiffer Ltd. Quilts 2x3 This marvelous memory painting by folk/outsider artist (Kentucky 1919) is a grand painting. The color composition is so fabulous. The blue and red in the quilts is stellar. The contrast of primary colours and the strength in the detail can take anyone to that farmhouse in the country. The sun is shining and the grass is growing. The signed painting is oil on canvas and the dimensions are 25 1/2 x 37 1/2 inches. It comes in a contemporary wood frame.
