ENGLISH STERLING LATE VICTORIAN CROOK HANDLE CANE

This English late Victorian gentleman's cane has a distinctive sterling silver crook handle that measures 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches, a hardwood shaft, and a metal tip. The hallmarks include the lion passant, the letters JH (Jonathan Howell) in a diamond cartouche, and the date letter "i" for 1904-5. The maker was Henry Howell & Co of Old St London, and they employed 460 people in a factory of 60,000 sq ft in 1892. The company started with John Howell in 1832 and packed up just over a hundred years later. The walking stick is 37 inches overall. This stick must have cut quite a swath in its day.
