| This carved wooden walking stick belonged to a graduate of the Class of 1906 Dartmouth College and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. During the late nineeenth century, it became fashionable and traditional for students to carry school canes, usually decorated with fraternity emblems, the student's and his classmates' names, and significant symbols. As early as 1898, Dartmouth graduates received a walking stick with the carved the Monhegan Indian, the school's mascot. In this cane, the Beta Theta Pi fraternity crest and the names of several fraternity members are carved into the stick. The cane has a silver collar and bimetal tip and measures 35-1/2 inches overall. | |||||||||
