JULY 4th 1867 COIN SILVER PRESENTATION CREAMER

This handsome coin silver presentation cream jug bears the Gorham coin silver mark and is in fact a presentation piece. Engraved on the body is "C.B.F. From Estus Lamb July 4, 1867." In 1860, Estus Lamb, a Providence, Rhode Island gentleman, and Henry Mansfield owned a scythe factory in Forestdale, R.I. and had seven contracts for the model 1860 cavalry sabres during the Civil War. Sabres remained the standard weapon of cavalry for mounted action in most armies til World War I. In 1872, Estus Lamb and George W. Holt together formed the Putnam Manufacturing Company, a cotton goods firm. The creamer measures 8 inches to the finial, 6-1/4 inches from handle to spout, and 4-1/2 inches in diameter at the widest point. It weighs 20.19 troy ounces. It's an interesting piece of history and a functional one at that!
