POWERFUL TIM LEWIS STONE FOLK ART CRUCIFIXION/41" TALL

This powerful sandstone folk art Crucifixion by the incomparable Tim Lewis stands 41 inches tall, 24 inches wide and 7 inches deep. It is one of his larger works, and nothing gets lost in the translation to a larger scale. Tim was born in Eastern Kentucky in 1952 just down the road from his present hilltop home, which he built himself for his wife and daughters. Subject matter for his art includes Biblical themes, animals and popular figures carved from sandstone that has been salvaged from chimneys of houses that have burned down. Besides being held in many important private collections, Lewis’ work is owned by the Mennello Museum in Orlando, Florida, Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, Ohio), the Owensboro (Kentucky) Museum of Fine Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Kentucky Folk Art Center in Morehead. Lewis was represented in the exhibition “Flying Free” at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was also commissioned to do a permanent installation for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. He is a major talent of the twentieth century. Tim Lewis’ work is illustrated in Outsider Art of the South (Schiffer Publishing Ltd.) by Kathy Moses. Examples of his work are currently on display at The High Museum in Atlanta.
