| PROFESSOR OTTO POERTZEL (1876-1963), one of the greatest Art Deco sculptors in Germany, was born in Scheibe in 1876. The son of a porcelain designer, he studied under Professor R. Moller at the Porcelain Industrial Technical School and set up in Coburg as a sculptor during the 1920s-30s. In 1908 he went to study at the Munich Academy with Professor Erwin Kurz, who was a famous teacher and sculptor of public statues, and professor Adolph von Hildebrandt at the Munich Academy. He worked closely in Berlin with Kassler and Ferdinand Preis and in fact many of their works were indistinguishable. He also worked with Rosenthal und Maeder. He received the Knight's Cross of Ernestine House Order and the Knight's Cross of the Bulgarian National Civil Order. He exhibited in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair and at the 1910 Brussels International Exhibition. Poertzel made many portraits, in cluding one of Ferdinand, the King of Bulgaria. He also made many garden statues and massive monuments. He was named Honorary Professor by the state and his sculptures are often signed "Prof. Proetzel", as is this one. He was a founding member of the Coburg Art Association. Dimensions of this charming bronze, entitled High Flyer, are 9-1/4 inches in height x 6 inches in width, including marble base. Bronze portion less base is 7-3/4 in. high x 5-1/2 in. This is a treasure for the discriminating Art Deco bronze collector. | |||||||||||
