| This extraordinary oil on canvas painting depicts the Return of the Prodigal Son and dates from the last half of the nineteenth century and has an Italian provenance. The Return of the Prodigal Son illustrates one of the best knwn parables of Jesus. Found in Luke 15:11-32 of the New Testament, it refers to a son who returns home after squandering his fortunes. The term "prodigal son" has passed into wider usage to mean a son or other dependent who does not live up to the expectations of those who have lanched hm or her into a life or career. The son is beaten down, ashamed, and afraid. All his arrogance and pride has given way to fear. He knows he's returning home unwanted and unloved; but in that moment, where the father could have turned him away in a righteous fit of anger, he instead raises his garment, tucks the frightened boy inside and says simply, "I love you. Thank God you are alive." The artist, though unknown, marks the moment of union beautifully. Dimensions: 16 x 25.5 in., sight size; 22.5 x 29.7/8 in. in anique gilt frame. | |||||||||||
